...delightful if not necessarily hugely innovative for the time. The playing by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and soloists is excellent.
Uppsala, Sweden is hardly known today as a hotbed of compositional activity during the baroque period; nor is the name of Johann Joachim Agrell known much today at all--only a handful of recordings of his works are available. This new one is among the best. It includes three concertos (one for oboe, one for violin, and one double concerto for harpsichord and flute) along with three orchestral sinfonias, all of which are delightful if not necessarily hugely innovative for the time. The playing by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and soloists is excellent. (RA)
